I got to thinking about security today when I discussed it with a friend of mine. I love the Firefox webbrowser with all the possibilities it has with extensions and addons. However, how can I be sure that these extensions does not hide malware or keyloggers? How are the source code of the extensions validated and verified that so they do not contain anything else than what it should? Wouldn't it be quite simple to create an extension and then spread it as a useful extension, and all the time hide malware of some form within the code?
I'll be starting a new thread on a forum and ask developers and people how they guarantee that the extensions are safe. One of the reasons I switched from Win to Linux, from Linux to Mac, is that I did not feel my data was secure on Windows at all, on Linux I felt more secure, and even more so on the Mac platform. Yes, you might argue that the OSX is filled with undiscovered security holes, but it still feels more as a solid and secure platform. Anyway, it wasn't OSX I wanted to discuss, but the security of extensions for Firefox. Perhaps I'm just being paranoid, but in todays digital society one have to be a bit paranoid about security and ones private data.
Searching the MozillaZine.org forums I came across this post:
